What You Will Do



The AOT-RFE Group is looking to hire an Engineered Systems Tec 4. This position will perform technical installation and/or maintenance functions supporting engineering activities for magnet power supplies and pulsed power equipment. The incumbent will also be responsible for installing, testing, repairing, and maintaining systems and equipment for the LANSCE Accelerator. Specific duties may include testing, inspecting, and monitoring system and equipment for safety and efficiency, providing routine and specialized maintenance and/or repair, troubleshooting malfunctions, and coordinating any system or equipment shutdown, upgrade, or installation. This position is expected to use the accelerator operations maintenance database, documentation, written or verbal instructions, schematics, rough sketches, diagrams, layouts, and plans to accomplish needed work. Additionally, forklift operation is a requirement of this position. Finally, this position provides “on-call” support for the magnet power supply, pulsed power, and HV Injector systems after hours approximately one week out of four weeks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience performing installation, maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment and systems.

  • Demonstrated experience safely troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining pulsed power systems.

  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining electrical equipment powered by 480VAC and 208VAC facility power.

  • Ability to learn safe troubleshooting and maintaining high current magnet power supplies up to 2500 A and 780 kW.

  • Demonstrated experience designing, fabricating, assembling, and testing electronic systems.

  • Demonstrated experience using DC current transformers, oscilloscopes, grounding sticks, and voltmeters.

  • Ability to learn safe troubleshooting and maintaining high voltage systems operating at up to 50 kV.

  • Demonstrated experience programming and troubleshooting micro programmable logic controllers.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and create schematics with Autocad or similar program.

  • Ability to collaborate with facility representatives and other groups and teams to support safety/reliability of equipment and systems.

  • Ability to complete Forklift training and license.

  • Ability to obtain a “Q” Clearance which generally requires U.S. Citizenship

Desired Skills

  • Demonstrated experience safely troubleshooting and maintaining high voltage systems operating at up to 50 kV.

  • Experience with accelerator operations, equipment/systems, and maintenance.

  • Skill in the preparation and presentation of systems/equipment reporting.

  • Extensive knowledge of the Laboratory's policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Experience with troubleshooting and repair of older control and interlock systems using mechanical relay logic.

  • Experience with making high reliability, multi kiloamp DC electrical connections.

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.

Education:

High school diploma and a minimum five years of related experience required. Engineering related Associates degree preferred.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in accelerator science, engineering, and operations in support of National User Facilities and in solving national security challenges. A principal element of the division's portfolio is operation, maintenance, and improvement of the accelerator, injector, beam transport, linear accelerators, proton storage ring, and targets of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), a multipurpose National User Facility that provides intense neutron and proton pulsed beams to support multidisciplinary fundamental and applied research and medical radioisotope production.

AOT’s Radio Frequency Engineering (AOT-RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in high power RF systems, high voltage systems, pulsed power systems, low level RF feedback and feedforward systems, and high current / high power magnet power supply systems. AOT-RFE’s primary focus is the design, development, and maintenance of these systems for the LANSCE Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE ) User Facility. This includes participation in current and future projects such as the MaRIE, the Matter-Radiation Interaction in Extremes experimental facility, which leverages the existing LANSCE proton linear accelerator and requires the installation of a new 12 GeV electron linear accelerator to produce a 42 keV ray FEL. AOT-RFE will be responsible for the RF systems, RF controls, magnet power supplies and pulsed power systems for MaRIE.
