Los Alamos National Laboratory Equipment Maintenance/Field Service Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 4/5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 4/Engineered Systems Tec 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Engineered Systems Tec 4/5 will provide electrical and mechanical support for the installation of and upgrades to fabrication equipment to include manual and CNC machining equipment, hydraulic presses, and other shop equipment for the High Explosives (HE) Fabrication and Disposition (J-8) Group within Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division. The successful candidate will report directly to the J-8 Group Leader. The Engineered Systems Tec will work in a team environment supporting the design and installation of equipment within a HE fabrication environment. Duties include operations, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and upgrades to standard and custom fabrication equipment. Specific duties of the position include but are not limited to the following
Engineered Systems Tec 4 ($60,400 - $95,900)
The successful candidate will:
  • Work from electrical schematics and mechanical drawings to install custom equipment within an HE environment

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of custom manufacturing equipment

  • Troubleshoot machine installations to validate proper machine operations

  • Assist in defining facility modifications necessary to support new equipment installations

  • Work on equipment used for fabrication of hazardous materials, typically high explosives.

  • Acquire and maintain pertinent certifications and qualifications to support installation and maintenance of equipment.

  • Occasional overtime may be required.

Engineered Systems Tec 5 ($72,500 - $118,200)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Engineered Systems Tec 5 will be required to:

  • Design custom electrical and mechanical systems to support HE machining operations

  • Work with group ESO to ensure electrical safety throughout entire facility

  • Assist in developing specifications for vendor supplied custom equipment

  • Train and mentor other employees.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working safely with electrical equipment powered by 480VAC and 208VAC facility power.

  • Demonstrated experience fabricating, assembling, and testing electronic/electrical systems.

  • Demonstrated experience fabricating, assembling, and testing mechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated experience performing installation, maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment and systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and repair equipment at the system level in the field and at component level in the laboratory using a variety of electronics bench instrumentation, such as digital oscilloscopes, DVMs, pulse generators, etc.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal including the ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.

  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the position and organization.

  • Ability to work a 4 day per week, 10 hour per day work schedule

Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 5:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Engineered Systems Tec 5 level requires:

  • Demonstrated ability to read and create schematics with Autocad or similar program.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience designing electronic/electrical systems.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience designing mechanical systems.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in maintaining system and process documentation.

  • Ability to be a technical leader within the organization, including training and mentoring other employees.

Desired Skills:

  • LANL Electrical Safety Officer qualified

  • Experience operating fabrication equipment including mills, lathes, saws, and grinders

  • Experience working in a facility supporting equipment that fabricates hazardous materials

  • Experience in the maintenance of manual and CNC equipment

  • Programming experience with PLCs or LabVIEW

  • Active DOE “Q”-Clearance or DOD Top Secret Clearance.

Engineered Systems Tec 4 Education Required: Position typically requires a high school diploma and four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

Engineered Systems Tec 5 Education Required: Position typically requires a high school diploma and a minimum six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.
