What You Will Do

Reporting to the TA55 Deployed Facilities Support ESH Manager, the Industrial Hygiene and Safety (IHS) Professional is responsible for developing, recommending, and implementing programs and procedures associated with the recognition, measurement, evaluation, and control of potential health and safety hazards. The IHS Professional will provide daily industrial hygiene and safety support to programmatic and facility organizations to ensure the protection of workers, compliance with Laboratory ES&H; requirements, and mission success. The IHS Professional will use professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways and contribute to the development of new theories and methods. The IHS Professional collaborates with the work force in developing solutions to complex ESH problems that require in-depth analysis of work activities and data. The IHS Professional promotes safety, security, and quality in all operations; exercises prudent fiscal and property management; promotes teamwork within the organization and across the Laboratory; promotes a positive work environment; and delivers exceptional customer service. This position will be filled at either the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

IH&S; Professional 3 ($87,000 - $144,800)

  • Advanced knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE and regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety in a research environment.

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience implementing industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.

  • Advanced knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene exposure assessment (both qualitative and quantitative), to include sampling and sampling techniques/instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.

  • Advanced skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene/safety technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Advanced knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Advanced experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to industrial hygiene and safety related problems.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

  • Trained and fit to wear respiratory protection.

IH&S; Professional 4 ($96,600 - $161,300)

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the IH&S; Professional Level 4 requires:

  • Expert knowledge and application of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Work Management, and other industrial hygiene and safety procedures.

  • Expert-level knowledge and ability to evaluate hazard controls and exposure data in order to make recommendations and improvements.

  • Expert-level knowledge and ability to develop, review, and evaluate site-specific safety/health programs and requirements.

  • Expert-level experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions and recommending solutions to problems affecting industrial hygiene and safety.

  • Expert level skills in the preparation and presentation of industrial hygiene and safety technical reports and communication with technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Expert-level ability to represent the organization and laboratory on various internal or external boards and committees.

Desired Skills:

  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, activities.

  • Experience identifying, applying, and interpreting federal codes, standards, and regulations in several IH program areas, including chemical safety, beryllium, exposure assessment.

  • At least one year of experience working in a nuclear facility.

  • Experience with internal (LANL) Environmental Safety & Health data collection tools and databases.

Education:

IHS Professional 3: A bachelor’s degree in related technical discipline and a minimum of eight years of related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional-level experience. An advanced degree and relevant professional certification preferred.

IHS Professional 4: A bachelor’s degree in related technical discipline and a minimum of twelve years of related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional-level experience. An advanced degree and relevant professional certification required.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
