Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:
Work as a part of a multi-discipline engineering design team deployed to TA-55
Design, maintain, and upgrade facility mechanical gas and liquid systems, ventilation, or mechanical components and fabrication of new facility gloveboxes and glovebox components
Prepare technical reports and studies
Collect the requirements for the system, process, and components design or analysis task, and then prepare design concepts that meet the requirements
Develop design details, design or analysis calculations, specifications, pressure safety documentation, P&IDs;, etc. that incorporate the applicable design and national code requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines, the Project Engineer, and the customer during the all stages of design and construction support
Support the associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations
Promote leadership, quality, and safety values in all aspects of job duties
Implement the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program
Perform Engineering Evaluations of equipment and systems for performance, safety, and deficiencies
Demonstrate a basic understanding of industry and material codes and standards, e.g. ASME, ASTM, UMC, UPC Codes and Standards
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
This position will be filled at either the Mechanical Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.
Mechanical Engineer (Engineer 3) ($84,300-139,000):
Advanced knowledge of building mechanical systems (gas and liquid building/process piping)
Advanced knowledge of building ventilation systems
Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering design, fabrication, analysis, and principles
Advanced knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination
Advanced proficiency with mechanical design software including functional capability with Inventor/CAD/BIM and FEA software
Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office software suite (including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Powerpoint)
Advanced Knowledge of Mechanical Software, analysis tools (e.g. Matlab, MathCad, Fathom)
Knowledge/Understanding of ASME B31.3, B31.9, and Uniform Mechanical/Plumbing codes
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to non-reactor facility design, operation, and maintenance
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and customers
Mentor/coach Junior engineers
Provide technical design reviews of peers and younger engineers
Ability to produce cost and schedule estimates for mechanical design and fabrication
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE Standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance
Requires six to eight years of relevant design experience
Mechanical Engineer (Engineer 4) ($101,300-171,000):
In addition to the job requirements outlined above, additional qualifications include:
Considered and SME in mechanical engineering
Requires 10 to 12 years of relevant design experience
Recognized expertise in a mechanical discipline
Extensive experience in the development of fabrication designs
EDUCATION:Requires a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Accredited College or University (MS desirable)
Mechanical Engineer (Engineer 3):
Four years of nuclear design experience
Familiarity of LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Policies and Procedures
Demonstrated knowledge of designing Pu-238 and Pu-239 processes or systems
Demonstrated knowledge of glovebox design (chemical or nuclear)
Professional Engineering License
Mechanical Engineer (Engineer 4):
In addition to the desired skills outlined above, additional qualifications include:
Six years of nuclear design experience
Demonstrated knowledge of LANL Quality policies and procedures
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2:This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
