Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoc in Experimental Acoustics and Vibration in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Geophysics Group in theEarth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division atLos Alamos National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a creative and resourceful postdoc candidate with a substantial experience in experimental acoustics and vibration to join the Elasticity, Vibration and Acoustics (EVA) Laboratory. The research is expected to produce a series of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals. The selected candidate will work on developing, implementing, and applying diagnostics tools based on linear and nonlinear acoustics to interrogate material properties. Applications range from nondestructive testing of metallic components to characterization of rock properties under various environmental conditions. The term of the appointment is 2 years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on the performance and funding availability. Candidates may be also nominated for a Director's LANL Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines LANL Distinguished Fellowships. For general information about the application processes and the LANL fellowships refer to theLANL Postdoctoral Program page.

Nonlinear mesoscopic elastic materials exhibit unique and interesting properties related to nonlinear and nonequilibrium dynamics that are relevant to various natural and industrial processes ranging in scales and applications, e.g., the onset of earthquakes and avalanches in geophysics, the aging of infrastructures in civil engineering, the failure of mechanical parts in industrial settings, bone fragility in the medical field, or the design of novel materials, including nonlinear metamaterials, for shock absorption, acoustic focusing, and energy-harvesting systems. The EVA Laboratory is in search of a postdoc to be involved in applying nonlinear elastic wave propagation for near borehole imaging for carbon sequestration and oil and gas, for crack detection in industrial parts, and diagnostic development for LANL specific mission problems.
