Los Alamos National Laboratory Ultrafast Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Materials in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Experimental Postdoctoral Position in ultrafast extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy of materials: the Physical and Chemical Spectroscopy Group (C-PCS) in collaboration with the Laboratory for Ultrafast Materials Optical Science (LUMOS) is seeking outstanding candidates to join our efforts to study and control material properties in correlated electron materials (i.e., magnetic and ferroelectric materials) through excitation with ultrafast XUV pulses. The project will involve primarily table top experiments with higher harmonic generation (HHG) sources as well as experiments at XUV and X-ray Free Electron Lasers, depending on beam time availability. The postdoc will be part of a one-of-a-kind collaborative environment consisting of accomplished scientists in ultrafast spectroscopy, materials science, laser physics, condensed matter physics and molecular dynamics theory and materials synthesis. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Strong hands-on, experimental background in at least one of these areas: higher order harmonic generation (HHG), high intensity ultrafast lasers (i.e. Ti:Sa laser systems such as regens and multi-pass amplifiers), ultrafast spectroscopy preferably in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range, experience working at x-ray or extreme ultraviolet free electron lasers. Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex laser spectroscopy experiments involving ultrafast laser systems, vacuum equipment, timing systems and interfacing with cameras and detectors.

Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of ultrafast laser systems (titanium-sapphire) and high power ultrafast systems, Q-switched YAG lasers, ultrahigh vacuum equipment, Labview, Matlab and/or Phytho software and programming, condensed matter physics, excited state dynamics, nonlinear optics (e.g. second harmonic generation from probing material properties), knowledge of Magneto-optical effects such as MOKE or similar methods, and experience working at free electron lasers or other light sources or synchrotrons. Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work in a diverse Team environment.


A Ph.D. completed within the last five years or soon to be completed is required.
